Fluidigm
Software platform
Fluidigm, pioneers in molecular biology technology (now Standard BioTools), engaged us to help elevate their product experience to match the innovation of their science. While competitors emphasized engineering dashboards and technical metrics, Fluidigm sought to position themselves as visionaries transforming the way life science research is done. My role was to design a unified UI/UX system for three of their flagship instruments, as well as a remote, web-based experiment design tool. The objective: simplify complex runs, reduce error, and free scientists to focus on the science rather than the machinery.
Through immersive research we observed operators relying on sticky notes and three-ring binders to navigate the original engineer-designed dashboards. That insight drove a complete rethinking of the experience—removing noise, introducing progressive disclosure, and embedding contextual cues directly into the workflow. The result was a streamlined system that scientists reported as more intuitive, less error-prone, and far easier to use. This shift aligned with Fluidigm’s broader brand evolution and their eventual transformation into Standard BioTools, where design and usability became as central to their vision as scientific capability.
